Ukraine, unfortunately, bears the grim distinction of being the most heavily mined country globally, with 30% of its territories contaminated by landmines.
Russia left an estimated amount of 2,000,000 landmines in the field. Many of these are designed specifically to harm people, including booby traps and a variety of prohibited antipersonnel mines fired from specialized ground launchers. These landmines pose a particularly grave danger to children.
Ukraine trains a few hundred specialists every month for the humanitarian demining of its territory. This effort requires a diverse array of equipment, including basic tools such as dielectric probes and metal hooks used to safely identify and disarm landmines.
We Help Ukraine, a Ukrainian non-profit organization led by a professional sapper specialized in
demining, has already manufactured over 8,000 life-saving basic devices at an incredibly low cost. This
cost-effectiveness is accomplished through the contributions of volunteers who offer their labor at no
charge and by ensuring that no profit is made on the devices. In contrast, retail prices for similar
equipment are experiencing a significant surge in Ukraine.
